In December 17, ACHPER WA wrote to Hon Sue Ellery BA MLC to disagree with the Department of Education’s sentiment that camp schools are not the core business of education. Our argument was that the opportunities and challenges presented in an intensive, cost-prohibited, outdoors environment supports and strengthens healthier, safer and more physically active living. ACHPER expressed concern that fiscal restraint was prioritised ahead of the health and wellbeing of young Western Australians, especially in light of the recent report from the WA’s Commissioner for Children and Young People: The Profile of Children and Young People in WA.
As the key association for Health and Physical Education in WA, ACHPER is committed to acting as a voice for teachers and subsequently developing a range of position statements to support healthier, safer and more physically active living.
The response from the Minister received in March 2018, was that Broome will remain as the only camp school run by the Department, and private providers will run the other camp schools. The Department does not view the service of camp provision as core business.
Outdoors WA are also a vocal advocate against the school camp closures, please review their latest news on the matter.
