Flatwater Guide Canoe & Kayak – two day course

Outdoor Education Professional Learning

Review

Paddle WA ran two courses on behalf of ACHPER, these were run at Ascot Kayak Club.
The first course which was run over one day was on the 18 December 2018, this course was for a qualification for Flatwater Guide in Canoes, we had eight (8) people attend the course.
Areas covered under this award are that those participants that pass are qualified to guide groups of novices on activity and day-based programs on flatwater which include lakes, dams, slow moving rivers etc. The skills that the participants acquired during the day were many paddle strokes that they were shown and then the participants had to demonstrate them.
The participants also had to perform self and buddy rescues, perform a tow, the course also went into the importance of risk-management, about the equipment required to lead a paddle and interpreting the weather, there are many more components in this course that were covered on the day.
From the eight attendees, two have already put in their completed assessments and have passed.

On the 19 & 20 December 2018 a two-day course was run for Flatwater Guide but in both canoe and kayak, all the same areas were covered by the 12 attendees, out of these three (3) have completed their assessments and passed.

The groups from both days were an absolute pleasure to work with and there was a great deal of discussion regarding all areas of the very comprehensive qualification that was being delivered.
